Chain Reaction: The Hanford Project
Douglas Gast - multimedia
Zach Mazur - photography

Douglas Gast is an Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at WSU Tri-Cities and is presenting a video projection loop of the area close to the restricted Hanford zone where "glowing" computer animated tumbleweeds and other plants appear on the horizon. He includes also a large number of tumbleweeds from this same area internally illuminated with green and yellow fluorescent bulbs. There is a sound work piece with low frequency tones and a Geiger counter. Also, a discussion panel of environmental groups, academia, local officials, and members of the press will meet at the beginning of the show.

Zach Mazur has a Masters of Fine Arts from Washington State University and was Allied Arts MFA Scholarship winner in 2005. He is the Preparator for the Museum of Art at WSU and is teaching at CBC this quarter. His work includes photographs of the Palouse and Hanford areas. While travelling the Hanford perimeter, Zach experienced the contradiction of Hanford: peaceful wildlife refuges and recreational areas surrounded by the potential hazards lurking in the groundwater nearby. Working the small gap between the Hanford security fences and highways, he photographed this conflict of beauty and toxicity to invite the viewer into this quandry of "Circumnavigating the Hanford Nuclear Reservation."
